Trapped, by Michael Northrop (we have no idea why it's so popular but it's always in the top circ'ing books every year!)Ĭute, fluffy romance books by people like Sarah Dessen, Kasie West, Jennifer E. Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner (usually because their parents or older siblings read these and know to recommend them) John Green (his books are still in the top circ'ing books every year) About once a month I get a voracious fantasy teen reader who comes in and checks out like 15 fantasy titles at once. Most YA fantasy seems to be targeted at adult women, which is a whole different conversation. There's a lot of "appropriate" adult sci-fi to recommend - I usually direct them to stuff like Ender's Game, Hitchhiker's Guide, Jon Scalzi, etc. I also see a specific, usually male, sci-fi teen reader who ends up aging out of the limited YA sci-fi after about 3 books. Quite frankly, most of the teens who read pick up contemporary more than fantasy. I work at a large, downtown main library - I get teens from the suburbs who want to browse our larger collection, and also inner city teens who ride the bus downtown to just hang out.

the cover of The Betrothed looks simultaneously like it belongs in mass market adult romance and like it was published 8 years ago. There was a whole slew of books around that time with covers of girls in those big fluffy ball gowns and they just seem so dated to me. The “sad girls in pretty dresses” kind of books just don’t go out anymore.

I know Netflix picked up that Selection show, so maybe she’s hoping to market her old stuff to a new audience and then there’s another series to keep them coming back. Not to say it might not be an enjoyable guilty pleasure read to some, or that a young teen might not enjoy it, but it isn’t a good book ya know? The early reviews are abysmal - I review a lot of ARCs and for an average rating to be that low from people who requested and arc because they were excited and were primed to like it means the book is just bad.

I’m a teen librarian and I honestly don’t even know who this book is supposed to be for! Is it a nostalgia read for the now-adults who read The Selection as teens? It’s ostensibly for teens, but it is so far from on-trend with what teens have been checking out from the library and what has been doing well.
